Electrical Engineering practice questions (Jahziah exam)

One worked question for each of the 5 official subject areas of Electrical Engineering, from a bank built on ETEC’s academic standards. Work them here, then practise the full set — with spaced review and timed mocks — in the app, free.

Area 01 · Electrical circuits

What is the main difference between linear and non-linear circuits?

  1. Linear circuits have a predictable output response, while non-linear circuits do not
  2. BNon-linear circuits follow a simple scaling rule, while linear circuits do not
  3. CBoth types of circuits behave in exactly the same way.
  4. DNone of above
WHY

Linear circuits obey the principle of superposition, so output scales proportionally with input and is predictable. Non-linear circuits do not obey superposition, so their response is not linearly proportional, matching option A.

Area 02 · Electronics

An ideal inverting op-amp has feedback resistance 89 kΩ and input resistance 10 kΩ. What is the magnitude of voltage gain?

  1. A17.8
  2. B4.45
  3. C13.9
  4. 8.9
WHY

|Aᵥ| = R_f/R_in. Substituting the stated values gives 8.9. Whole-number results are given exactly; others are shown to six significant figures.

Area 03 · Electromagnetics

The dominant mode in a rectangular waveguide is TE10 because this mode has

  1. Ano attenuation
  2. Bno cut off
  3. Cno magnetic field component
  4. the highest cut off wavelength
WHY

The dominant mode is defined as the mode with the lowest cutoff frequency, which corresponds to the longest cutoff wavelength. For a rectangular waveguide, TE10 has λc = 2a, larger than any other mode, so it propagates first as frequency increases.

Area 04 · Signals & systems

Which of the following is NOT a sampling method?

  1. Aimpulse train sampling
  2. Bnatural sampling
  3. Cflat-top sampling
  4. Adaptive δ sampling
WHY

Sampling methods include ideal (impulse-train) sampling, natural sampling, and flat-top sampling. Adaptive δ modulation is a modulation scheme that quantizes a signal incrementally, not a sampling method, so it does not belong to this list.

Area 05 · Digital systems

What is the decimal equivalent of the hexadecimal number FF?

  1. 255
  2. B256
  3. C257
  4. D258
WHY

Each hexadecimal digit is weighted by a power of 16, so FF = 15 × 16¹ + 15 × 16⁰ = 240 + 15 = 255. Option A gives this value.
