Information Technology practice questions (Jahziah exam)

One worked question for each of the 9 official subject areas of Information Technology, from a bank built on ETEC’s academic standards. Work them here, then practise the full set — with spaced review and timed mocks — in the app.

Area 01 · User experience design

A UX researcher has gathered interview notes, diary studies and support-ticket themes from frequent users of a scheduling tool. Which approach best uses this data to build a user persona that supports human-centered design decisions?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

Personas are grounded in behavioral patterns derived from real user data: shared goals, behaviors, and pain points. Grouping by these patterns produces actionable archetypes that inform HCD decisions.

Area 02 · Global professional practice

A project manager is choosing a tool to track a project that is already running. The project has many short tasks with shifting dependencies, and the manager needs to see, week by week, which tasks are late and how each delay pushes later tasks. Which tool is best suited to this tracking need?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

A Gantt chart with dependency links plots each task as a bar on a time axis, shows dependencies, and tracks actual progress, so late tasks and the resulting delay in successors are immediately visible week by week.

Area 03 · Cybersecurity principles

A company's risk register lists three facts about one of its servers: (i) the server runs an unpatched web application, (ii) a criminal group is actively scanning for exactly that vulnerability, and (iii) the server holds customer payment data. Which option correctly assigns these facts to the terms vulnerability, threat, and risk?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

(i) is a vulnerability (weakness in the system). (ii) is a threat (an actor capable of exploiting the weakness). (iii) is the risk (the potential for loss if the threat exploits the vulnerability).

Area 04 · Networking

A network technician captures a frame at a switch. The frame's payload contains a segment with a TCP header, which includes a destination port number. The frame's own header contains source and destination MAC addresses. The switch forwards the frame based on the destination MAC address. Which statement best explains this forwarding behaviour in terms of the OSI model?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

A switch operates at the data-link layer (Layer 2). It builds a MAC address table and forwards frames to the port associated with the destination MAC address. It does not inspect Layer 4 information such as TCP destination ports, and it is not a Layer 1 repeater nor a Layer 3 router.

Area 05 · Platform technologies

A Unix-class file system uses indexed allocation with an inode containing 10 direct block pointers and one single-indirect pointer. The block size is 2 KiB and each pointer is 4 bytes. A process writes several files and the administrator compares them. Which conclusion about the maximum number of data blocks reachable through the inode is most accurate?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

Each indirect block holds 2048/4 = 512 pointers. With 10 direct pointers plus 512 single-indirect pointers, 522 data blocks are addressable; the indirect block itself stores pointers, not file data. Option C is the accurate description.

Area 06 · Information management

A database fails at 11:00. The backup schedule is: full backup Sunday 23:00, incremental backups at 23:00 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the failure occurs on Thursday morning before any Thursday backup. Which backups must be applied, and in what order, to recover to the Wednesday 23:00 state?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

An incremental backup captures only changes since the previous backup. The chain is Sunday full → Monday incremental → Tuesday incremental → Wednesday incremental, applied in that order to reconstruct the Wednesday 23:00 state.

Area 07 · System paradigms

A requirements engineer is documenting a use case "Submit Expense Claim" for an accounting system. The main success scenario is: 1. Employee enters claim amount and category. 2. System validates the amount against the category limit. 3. System records the claim and returns a claim reference. The engineer must derive a functional requirement from the alternative flow that applies when the entered amount exceeds the category limit. Which requirement is correctly derived from that alternative flow?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

Deriving from the alternative flow where the amount exceeds the category limit gives: display a limit-exceeded message, reject the claim, and return to amount entry without recording. This is option B.

Area 08 · Software fundamentals

A developer uses an iterative process in which user feedback is collected after each working version and incorporated in the next. Which statement best describes the effect of this practice on the developing program?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

In an iterative process, each working version is released, evaluated by users, and the resulting feedback determines the changes made in the next iteration. Over successive versions the program progressively converges toward the user's actual requirements rather than a frozen initial specification.

Area 09 · Web & mobile systems

A developer is building a web application with a shopping cart. The cart contents must persist while the user browses different pages, but should be discarded when the browser is closed. Which cookie configuration achieves this?

Pick an answer to check yourself.

WHY

Omitting Expires and Max-Age produces a session cookie that lives until the browser closes. Option B does this while setting Path.
