Mechanical engineering exit exam: topics, format and how to prepare

The mechanical version of the readiness test measures the core of a mechanical degree — how solids and fluids behave, how energy moves, and how you design and control a system. Questions students ask

What topics does the mechanical engineering exam cover?

Eight official areas: mechanics and vibrations, mechanics of materials, materials and manufacturing, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, measurements and controls, and mechanical design. ETEC publishes the authoritative subject standard, and our practice is mapped to exactly those areas.

How many questions are on it, and how long?

ETEC describes the engineering assessments as 55–85 multiple-choice questions in 90–120 minutes, including a short questionnaire — treat that as the published guide and confirm current figures for your field. The timed mocks in the app are approximate and labelled as such.

Which areas should I revise first?

Start where the curriculum weight is heaviest — thermodynamics and mechanics of materials carry the most — then spread across the remaining six so nothing is left unseen. Practising a few questions per area beats spending a whole day on one chapter.
