Civil engineering exit exam: topics, format and how to prepare

Civil engineering is the broadest of the five: a single exam touches steel and concrete, soil, roads, water, surveying and site management. The strategy is coverage first — meet every area once — because a question you have never seen cannot be reasoned out under exam pressure.

What areas does the civil engineering exam cover?

Eight official areas: structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation, construction management, environmental engineering, water resources, surveying, and construction materials. Structural and geotechnical questions carry the most weight.

Do I need the design codes?

The exam tests principles and standard practice, not obscure code clauses. Knowing why a beam is sized the way it is matters more than memorising a table of values you will not be given anyway.

How do I cover so many topics in time?

Set a small daily goal, rotate between two or three areas a day, and let the review queue bring back what you miss. Ten focused questions a day across six weeks covers far more than sporadic marathon sessions.
