Surveying study guide (Civil Engineering)

Surveying is the measurement and representation of the ground: where a point is, how far it is from another point, what the shape of a parcel is, how much soil must be cut or filled, and how high the finished surface sits. The subject is built on a small number of ideas that repeat in every problem. An angle and a distance define a direction and a position; coordinates turn those positions into a map; a closed traverse checks itself by returning to where it started; and leveling compares heights against a benchmark. Area and volume follow from the geometry once the points are known. The guide treats the three groups that the exam uses most: angles, distances and coordinates; area and earthwork; and leveling. Each section carries the working relations, the sign conventions and the closure checks, because most marks are lost on a sign, a quadrant or a misclosure that was never computed. Every section opens with a quick-revision card, and the worked examples run from easy to exam level.

Structured by the official ETEC subject standard for this topic: every listed topic and learning outcome, with formulas, figures and worked examples. The full sections are available to members in the app.

SKU 7.1 · Surveying

  1. Angles, distances and coordinate systems

Bearings and azimuths, latitude and departure, traverse closure and precision, map scale, and the coordinate systems a total station works in.

  2. Area and earthwork volumes

Area by coordinates, the trapezoidal and Simpson rules, and volumes by average end area and the prismoidal formula, with shrinkage and swell.

  3. Leveling and elevations

Differential leveling by height of instrument and rise/fall, loop misclosure and its adjustment, percent grades and trigonometric leveling.
