Global professional practice: projects, governance and the law study guide (Information Technology)
An IT specialist does not only build systems; they plan work, estimate it, govern it, and answer for how it treats people and their data. This unit covers the professional side: the tools of project management (work breakdown, critical path, earned value), the process groups and phase gates that keep a project under control, the system development life cycle and its models, IT governance and organisational culture, and resource management with its costs and power. The second part covers the rules around the work: ethical codes and conflicts of interest, legal duties and contracts, privacy and data protection, and intellectual property, including open-source licences and transnational questions. Each section opens with a quick-revision card; the project and resource sections carry worked calculations. An information system is people, process, data, software, hardware and networks organised to collect, process, store and distribute information for a purpose; the technology is only one component, which is why governance, policy and training decide whether it works.
Structured by the official ETEC subject standard for this topic: every listed topic and learning outcome, with formulas, figures and worked examples. The full sections are available to members in the app.
SKU 2.1 · Principles of information systems and project management
Project management tools and techniques
Planning and tracking a project with the tools a manager actually uses: the work breakdown structure, a dependency network with the critical path and float, earned value (PV, EV, AC, CV, SV, CPI, SPI) and its forecasts, and the Gantt chart that communicates the plan.
Project management processes
The five process groups (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, closing), what a charter, a plan, a phase gate and a change request do, and how the process groups repeat within phases rather than running once.
The system development life cycle: phases, models and best practice
The phases every SDLC shares (feasibility, requirements, design, build, test, deploy, maintain), and how waterfall, V-model, iterative, spiral, agile/Scrum and DevOps arrange them differently — with the selection criteria an exam asks for.
IT governance principles
Who decides about IT and who is accountable: the board and IT steering, COBIT 2019's governance and management objectives, ITIL 4's service value system, risk appetite, and why the same framework produces different results in different organisational cultures.
IT resource management
Managing IT resources as a portfolio: total cost of ownership, server consolidation from measured utilisation, power usage effectiveness in the data centre, licence compliance, and the policy that makes capacity, cost and sustainability visible.
SKU 2.2 · Ethical, legal and privacy issues
Ethical issues in IT
Professional ethics as decisions, not slogans: the ACM Code's principles, conflicts of interest, honesty about systems and data, confidentiality, competence, and the difference between what is legal and what is right.
Legal issues in IT
The legal frame around IT work: contracts and service levels, liability and warranties, computer-misuse and data-protection law, employment and IP assignment, records and jurisdiction — and when to stop and ask a lawyer.
Privacy issues in IT
Personal data and its life cycle: lawful basis and purpose, minimisation, consent that is real, retention and deletion, subject rights, breach notification, privacy by design, and the Saudi PDPL and GDPR principles without invented clause numbers.
Intellectual property issues in IT
The four main forms of intellectual property (copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret), how software and data fit them, open-source licences from MIT to GPL, and the transnational questions of jurisdiction, treaties and assignment.
