The eight areas, and what each asks of you

• Mechanics & vibrations — statics, dynamics, and how systems oscillate. Practise the free-body diagram first; most mistakes start there.
• Mechanics of materials — stress, strain, torsion, bending. Learn the sign conventions and the standard cases cold; they repeat in different clothes.
• Materials & manufacturing — properties and processes. Know which process suits which shape, and which failure mode matters.
• Fluid mechanics — continuity, Bernoulli, and losses. Practise choosing the right equation from the wording alone.
• Thermodynamics — cycles and efficiency. Sketch the cycle before you calculate; the diagram usually reveals the path.
• Heat transfer — conduction, convection, radiation. Separate the three modes and match the formula to the mode.
• Measurements & controls — sensors, error, feedback. Be at ease with the basic concepts and units.
• Mechanical design — strength, fatigue, fits. Focus on why a choice is made, not just the number.

How to revise each area in a week

1. Answer 8–10 questions on the area before reading any notes. The misses tell you what to study.
2. Read only the explanations for what you missed, then re-answer those a day later.
3. Return to the area a week later, mixed with another subject, then move on.
